BBC presenter, Kirtsy Lang, opens the event, as anchor and host for the day at Talking Philanthropy 2024, reporting that representatives from some 47 countries are attending.
UN Representative, Ban Ki-Moon, sets the tone for the day, welcoming attendees and highlighting the importance of wealth transfer across the world: "Now (after a 3-year period of COVID-19) we need to address the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership".
Wealth Transform / Philanthropy / Global Welfare - "We stand at the threshold of an unparalleled opportunity: The world is about to witness the biggest transform of wealth offering a pivotal moment for us to channel our resources to address most urgent Global Challenges" - Ban Ki-Moon, UN
Philanthropy can help address some of the biggest challenges we face today: “Let's explore practical ways we can make a meaningful change by accelerating philanthropy around the world” - Lady Edwina Grosvenor
The UN Foundation was founded by the media tycoon Ted Turner by a million dollar gift. The Foundation has been a key player in introducing and implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It works together but separately to the United Nations. It aims to find solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges - Harshani Dharmadasa, UN Foundation
2030 is the deadline for achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals / SDGs. This is going to be a pretty historic moment, when leaders assess our progress towards this. We have only achieved 19% of that globally, however, and only a few years away :( - Harshani Dharmadasa, UN Foundation
By hey, getting the SDGs done is not an A+ essay. It's about shifting mentality, changing how institutions and systems work. Sometimes this takes generations. It's also about converting passion into compassion. It's about exploring solutions, ideas. It's important that we are not afraid of the 2030 moment. We should be critical about our actions and ability to change, via exploring the best pathways - Harshani Dharmadasa, UN Foundation: Unlock the Future Coalition - Summary of findings presented to the UN General Assembly in NYC in September 2024 - The Role of Youth in Wealth Transfer
We have a lot of talk happening on how to engage in positive SDGs activity but we don't do enough to avoid negative activity. Only 6% of worldwide philanthropic investment goes to the environment. And most of it comes from N. America (source: World Economic Forum) - What about the rest 94%? - Lindsay Hooper (Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership)
#Philanthropic #capital should not replace government investment on impactful strategies, it must act complimentary. Philanthropists, unlike the government, take more risks and are less stuck to bureaucracy. In case of successful pathways, then governments can help scale up - implementing appropriate strategies and tools designed to duplicate good practices - Dr. J Satrijo Tanudjojo
Transfer of wealth / Philanthropy: It's estimated that in the following year there's a 27% increase in billionaires in Asia. On the other end, there are 2.1 billion who have no access to drinking water.
Opinion on Philanthropy shaping Social Welfare: Progress can be achieved by philanthropists challenging governments, rather than just collaborating. Philanthropists have a native urge to go beyond their "comfort zone", themselves usually being entrepreneurs or businesspersons.

China has reportedly reduced the number of people living in extreme poverty by 800 million. The way of addressing this situation consisted of a set of three layers of redistribution strategy. The 1st is market mechanisms (what's the most efficient solution). The 2nd is public policy (fiscal taxation based on the principle of equity to redistribute resources). The 3rd layer is philanthropy and charity (based on the principle of ethics, the moral strategy to support the vulnerable). - Jiawei Ye
